Eleven years, Two Presidents, One kitchen!

WHITE HOUSE CHEF

I finished reading this book that my Aunt Liz loaned me. I really did enjoy it.

Walter Scheib was hired as the head chef by Hillary Clinton. He served them for seven years and then served George and Laura Bush for four years.

In this fascinating book, he shares a personal, kitchen-eye view of life at the White House. He manages to stay away from anything political, thus keeping things light and enjoyable.

He tells about preparations for state dinners honoring many world leaders, and small intimate dinners with recipes. I have to admit that a lot of the recipes he has in this book are things I have never heard of.
  • Grilled Arctic Char with Wild Mushroom Risotto
  • Kasha Pilaf
  • Mache, Frisee, and Peppercress Salad with Roquefort Cheese and Walnut Dressing
  • Minted Pea Soup
  • Hummus with Flat Bread
  • Roasted Seckel Pears

And many, many more.

He tells of President Bush's tee ball games on the White House lawn and how the President insisted that the hot dogs must be steamed, never grilled.

He gave Chelsea Clinton cooking lessons before she goes away to college.

All in all a very easy enjoyable book.
