June 22, 2014 started out as a normal day. I met Loren Jacob at South Troy church on Hwy 63 to pick up my great grandson, Levi. He had gone on the milk run with Grandpa Loren.
He went home with me and we played with his Fire truck, Police car, School bus, etc. He went out in the garage with Jerry and rode his little car around.
Around 3:45 pm, I got him in the car seat and we went to meet Cassie. I stopped at Michael's for a few minutes, and then went thru Culver's for a Salad at the drive thru window.
I turned onto Hwy 14 east and was coming up on the intersection of Marion Road. I remember seeing that I had the green light, next thing I remember was feeling confused and thinking my car was on fire. I could see the air bag, saw smoke and thought I needed to get out of the car. Some gal was by my window asking me if I was alright. I grabbed my purse and asked her if she could call my brother. She helped me get out of the car and walk over to the curb. Each step I took my ankle hurt more and more. I also could feel pain in my right rib area. She stayed with me until an ambulance came and they took me to Olmsted Community Hospital's ER.
They decided I needed to be at St Marys Trauma Unit, so I was transported there. After a number of Xrays and exams, I was told I had a fractured Sternum, four broken ribs, and my ankle was broken on two places. I was taken to a room in the Trauma unit.
This happened on Sunday afternoon around 4:30 pm. On Tuesday, I had surgery to put plates and screws in both sides of my ankle.
On Thursday, I went to a Nursing Home to have Physical Therapy and care. I couldn't put any weight on my ankle and because of the broken ribs I couldn't use crutches. So I was resigned to living in a wheel chair and bed. The first day or two I wasn't sure if I was going to survive in this facility. Thanks to my brother, my sister (came to see me on Friday afternoon) and my daughter, who came as often as she could, I decided my options weren't that good. I did have some visitors and that helped. Keith came down on Monday and we met with an attorney.
The PT people at Maple Manor were really great. I did a lot of Left leg strengthening and a lot of arm strengthening. It was usually for an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon. I did have TV in my room and for the first 10 days I had the room to myself.
On Saturday, June 28th, my daughter and brother went to an open house on a Patio home in our same development. On Monday, Jerry decided to buy it. It is all on one floor.
So began a new adventure of moving for me sight unseen, and also being resigned to a wheel chair.
